  Applied Microbial Biotechnology :

Biotechnology holds the promise for the future in almost areas of life. Today’s global scenario clearly shows that the path forward is through advancement in biotechnology. Whether it is agro, food, dairy, pharma, diagnostic, medical devices or nutraceutical industry, biotechnology is evidently having a pivotal role in offering improved products, cost effective processes and life saving drugs.

SRI has the required expertise and lab-scale infrastructure for bioprocess in microbial fermentation and downstream processing. SRI undertakes projects for clients interested in:

  • Developing technology for products of their interest OR
  • Evaluate or improvise a technology the client already has OR
  • Conduct basic work to produce and isolate cultures having commercial potential.

Isolation and screening of industrially useful microorganisms:

The failure or success of a biotechnology process and yield of a product is primarily based on having the appropriate culture or strain or clone.

SRI undertakes projects to isolate industrially useful cultures for clients. An intensive screening exercise is performed by processing various samples and using properly designed detection tests to isolate such promising cultures.

These cultures are identified up to species level by biochemical characterization and if desired by 16S ribosomal genetic analysis. The isolates are preserved and handed over to the client or further technology development project if initiated.

Examples are enzymes, vitamins, biosurfactants, probiotics, etc.

  Technology development - Upstream (Fermentation):

SRI has its core expertise in bioprocess technology development. The upstream activities that we take up as a project work are:

a. Media design:
various fermentation media are designed and tested. The data is to finally formulate a well balanced medium that can be used at commercial scale. The media parameters include the C source, N source, any precursors or inducers, sugar dosing etc.

b. Shake flask experiments:
Along with media design, the screening is performed parallel to check whether the biomass production, induction for production of the desired metabolite etc. is proper or enhanced. The fermentation process is partially monitored. The data collected through these experiments paves the way for going on to the Fermenter.

c. Optimization of Fermentation parameters:
SRI carries out the fermentation process at lab scale in an automatic fermenter.

The fermentation parameters typically cover the aeration, agitation, O2 requirements, induction timings, harvest parameters, etc. In addition to this the overall process is optimized and standardized so as to minimize variations when scaled-up.

The process parameters are tuned to increase the productivity and to reduce the cycle time for a particular batch.
