Cobalt is undoubtedly the most important & most widely used metallic drier. It works mainly as an oxidition catalyst and as such acts as a " Surface " or " Top Drier ". As it causes wrinkling surface it used alone, it is generally used in combination with other metals such as lead, manganese, zirconium and calcium.

Individually calcium has little role in drying but can work effectively as an" auxiliary" drier when used in combination with other active driers. Calcium is often used to replace lead where toxicity levels matters in application like try enamels, baby furniture finishes and sanitary finishes.

Manganese driers are intermediate in activity since they have both oxidity and polymerising properties. Generally used in combination with lead and cobalt and helps in producing hard, tough & durable films. Because of its dark color generally manganese drier is not used in white or light finished.

Zinc is an " auxiliary " drier, used in conjunction with the active metals. It primarily helps in keeping film "open" thus permitting hardening throughout. Zinc is also a powerful wetting and dispersing agent, and when added early in the formulation, it greatly reduces the mixing & grinding time

Zirconium mainly replaces lead and serves as " auxiliary " drier, generally used in combination with cobalt, manganese and/or calcium to promote " through" drying of the coating.

Lead octoate functions as a drier, which promotes polymerization of drying oils to hard insoluble films. Drying of the film through it's entire thickness is mainly caused by LEAD and is therefore also known as " Thorough Drier ". Lead also improves toughness & durability of the film. Lead drier is used generally in combination with Cobalt & Manganese.

BAP also offers METALLIC DRIERS bored on other metals like Barium, Copper, Cerium, etc. As the uses of above metallic driers are limited, the details of the application are not described. However the same can be furnished if required.
