Ball Bearings

Ball Bearings

Ball bearings consist of two hardened metal rings separated by a set number of perfectly spherical steel balls spaced equilaterally with a bearing cage. The balls run along concave grooves set into the rings placed one inside the other. Ball bearings can be found in everything from the washing machines to computers.

The ball bearing system requires a thin film of lubricant for high -speed applications to reduce friction and facilitate heat dissipation, corrosion prevention, and long bearing life. The raceways and the balls both have a fine surface finish and with proper lubrication less noise, less torque and long life, all can be achieved.
Ball bearings require one time lubrication that happens during the manufacture. Ball bearings may fail due to improper lubrication, excessive temperature or if the bearing or the raceway has been damaged.

Roller Bearings

Roller Bearings

Different types of roller bearings are cylindrical, spherical, tapered, and needle. They have higher load capacities than ball bearings and moderate-speed applications. However, except for cylindrical bearings, they have lower speed capabilities. Roller bearings are used in rotary applications to replace sliding movement with low friction, rolling.

Tapered roller bearings consist of four basic components including the inner ring, the outer ring, tapered rollers, and cage. Under normal operating conditions, the cage spaces and retains the rollers on the inner ring or the cone and rest of the elements carry the load. The cone, rollers and cage are referred to as the cone assembly. The cup (outer ring) is usually separable from the cone assembly.

They come in a variety of configurations like single-row, two-row, four-row and thrust bearing assemblies. Materials used for roller bearings are either alloy or low carbon steels. The carbon and alloys are added to ensure a proper combination of hard fatigue resistant case and a tough ductile core. Tapered roller bearings have the inherent advantage of being adjustable and, they can be set to approach optimum performance in almost any application. Automated roller bearing setting techniques offer many advantages like reduced setting time, assembly cost, and reliable setting..

To select the right roller bearing, one must determine the desired bearing life and a sufficient basic dynamic load rating to meet that life requirement. Roller bearings are used in power generation, wind turbines, gear drives, rolling mills. Single-row tapered roller bearings are used in machine tool spindles, gear reduction units etc.

Thrust Ball Bearings

Thrust Ball Bearings

Thrust Ball Bearings carry pure thrust (axial) loads. When a load is properly applied to this bearing, the internal contact points are aligned on a plane parallel to the shaft. Radial loads dislodge the balls from their track. Thrust ball bearings can be single direction and double direction designs.

Single Direction Thrust Ball Bearings
These bearings consist of one row of balls, which rotate, between a housing washer and a shaft washer. They are separable type and can be mounted separately. Single direction thrust ball bearings, can accommodate axial loads in one direction and locate a shaft axially in one direction. They are not suitable to any radial load.

Double Direction Thrust Ball Bearings
These bearings consist of two separate rows of balls which rotate between a center shaft washer and two housing washers. This bearing should be used when a thrust load is applied from two directions. They are separable type and can be mounted separately on the shaft. They can axially locate a shaft in both directions and should not be subject to radial loads.

The thrust ball bearings have flat housing washers. They do not allow any misalignment between the shaft and the housing or angle between their support surfaces. They are manufactured to normal tolerance as standard. They are available in pressed steel and machined brass or steel cage. For satisfactory operations, they should be subject to a minimum load. If the thrust bearings work at high speeds or changes in the direction of the loads, the inertia and friction may affect the rolling.

Taper Roller Thrust Bearings

Taper Roller Thrust Bearings

Taper roller thrust bearings enable axially very compact bearing arrangements and capacity to carry very heavy axial loads, are insensitive to shock loads and are stiff.

Single direction taper roller thrust bearings are used for the kingpin bearing arrangement of commercial vehicles. They have a full complement of rollers and are held together by a sheet steel cover. Most of these bearings are fitted with rubbing seals of wear and oil-resistant nitrile rubber. Bearings with shaft and housing washers of same dimensions have a tapered raceway and one retaining flange. These bearings suitable for very heavy axial loads

Certain bearings have a shaft washer with tapered raceway and retaining flange. These bearings can accept minor eccentricities of the shaft with respect to the housing bore without much influence on bearing performance. Bearings are fitted with a roller-centered cage.

Double direction taper roller thrust bearings are used with multi-row cylindrical roller bearings in rolling mill applications. Those bearings with a plane shaft washer are able to accommodate slight eccentricities of the shaft with respect to the housing bore. A spacer sleeve is arranged between the two housing washers.

The double direction taper roller thrust bearings with tapered raceways on the shaft and housing washers have a higher axial load carrying capacity than the ones with a plane shaft washer. They are usually mounted with a loose fit on the roll neck. The shaft washer of most bearings has one or two locating slots.

Taper roller thrust bearings accommodate extremely heavy axial loads and permit angular movement of the screw spindle with respect to the support. These bearings are full complement type and have extremely long rollers with large diameter
